NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY CELEBRATIONS AT NML - MAY 11, 2010

 

The National Technology Day was celebrated at the National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR), Jamshedpur on May 11, 2010. Shri Gautam Mukerjee, Managing Director, Fusion Engineering Products Limited, Jamshedpur was the Chief Guest on this occasion and delivered the Technology Day Lecture on "Relevance of India in the World Today - The R&D Advantage".

Dr. S. Srikanth, Director, NML welcomed all the Guests and Members of Staff of NML and highlighted the significance of the "National Technology Day". This day marks the day when India successfully conducted the Pokhran nuclear tests in May 1998 as well as many other landmark technology developments later. He has also touched upon major technological break through developments that India has achieved in the post independence era and especially over the last 25 years. This includes such phenomenal societal contributions made by entrepreneurs such as Shri Varaprasad Reddy of M/s Shantha Biotech by developing low cost Hepatitis - B vaccine that has made life so much safe for poor people of our country.

In his address Shri Mukerjee discussed the process of a global shift of research and development to India. He referred to the work of great Management Guru Prof. Michael Porter on what makes a nation great in a specific activity. Referring to Pandit Nehru 's vision of science & technology in modern India , he stressed that India's success relates to the great minds of it's scientist and technologists , a stable democracy, cost advantage and a unique value system that has pushed many of the world renowned organizations to base their R&D activities in India . In such a scenario, India should take full advantage of it's position to come up as a developed nation.

Earlier Dr. Sukomal Ghosh, Adviser (Management) spoke about technology development work being carried out at NML and Dr. Amitava Mitra, Deputy Director introduced the Chief Guest. Shri Bal Krishna, Administrative Officer, NML proposed a "Vote-of-thanks".

The programme ended with two video lectures by Dr. Hans Rosling and Mr. Pranav Mistry on "Technology and innovation".
